Mayor Afzul Rehman, his team of councillors and senior officials recently kick started a very successful Public Consultation during the weekend. The IDP/Budget roadshows are an annual event to which the Mayor visits all 31 wards and tables the budget to the community.

Rank Managers and Queue Marshalls from different associations can now be easily identifiable to their passengers. Portfolio Cllr for Community Services Cllr Nomathamsanqa Kunene handed over identity reflector jackets to the rank managers and queue Marshalls Monday the 8th of February.
The reflector jackets will help reduce the confusion that people always encounter when they visit the Newcastle Taxi Rank.
“As the Municipality we are trying to protect our community from chancers who pretend as if they are helping those who seek help with direction whilst they are planning on robbing them, they had been many confusions in our taxi ranks people did not know who to go to for help but now with these reflector jackets their safety is guaranteed” Said Cllr Kunene
The different Associations will be identified as follows:
The Sizwe Taxi Association’s Queue marshals will be identified by a red colour on their tags
Osizweni Association will be in Blue.
Masihambisane Taxi Association will be using Orange.
Osizweni Boundaries will be using yellow and Madadeni Taxi Association will be using green.
Cllr Kunene urged the community to use these services because they will ensure their safety.
The festive season and summer holidays are synonymous with excitement and it’s accompanied by lack of effective concentration. Danger and harm becomes imminent when people lose focus.
This period becomes a challenge for the Traffic Department when pedestrians and drivers do not work harmoniously in following simple road safety rules. For this reason traffic officers, will be displaying their zero tolerance approach to ensure the safety of all road users. To make this season a joyous one, the public should make sure they are responsible and safe at all times and more vigilant.
The following precautions will save you from getting a traffic fine, a jail sentence or losing your life Ensure that as a driver:
1. You carry the necessary documents (driver’s license, prdp as the case maybe)
2. Your vehicle documents are valid
3. The vehicle is roadworthy and you conduct regular inspections
4. You are in a sound and sober state when driving.
5. You have plenty rest.
6. You are not distracted with communication devices or passengers.
7. You obey the rules of the road and be courteous at all times.
8. Apply the k53 driving standards like you did when you went for your driver license test.
as a pedestrian:
• Be highly visible at all times.
• Adhere to the road rules.
• Walk briskly and avoid being distracted when crossing the road.
• Look out for vehicles and other dangers.
• Be patient and courteous.
The Newcastle Municipality’s Traffic Department wishes you a merry Christmas and a safe and productive new YEAR.

The Newcastle Municipality embarked on a clean-up campaign today in an effort to cleanse the CBD area. The CBD Clean-up Campaign is aimed at increasing business and public confidence in the CBD. This campaign is the initial and immediate intervention of the many more such activities to come in the future. This campaign also seeks to address some of the social ills and service delivery issues identified by the municipality in certain parts of the CBD. It involves clean-up operations, addressing maintenance challenges such as potholes and the dilapidated informal economy infrastructure, bylaw enforcement, as well as an education drive to change and influence people’s attitudes and perceptions. This campaign is expected to run for six months to build consciousness amongst the general public, formal and the informal business sector.
The Newcastle CBD is the economic engine room for the town and needs to be developed and maintained in a manner that conveys itself to investors and business alike. In an effort to maintain our positive outlook of the CBD and reversing the perception from our stakeholders, that the effects of decentralisation of business could extensively harm the CBD. The Municipality has initiated a number of programmes to drive economic activity, which is characteristic of the Newcastle city centre. The Municipality has set out a plan to re-engineer and re-organise its resources to reduce the negative economic impact that will burden the CBD.

Newcastle Local Municipality is making significant strides in the fight against HIV infection and the socio-economic impacts of AIDS. The Special Programmes Unit of the Municipality has intensified interventions aimed at assisting individuals to change behaviours that render themselves, families and the community at large, vulnerable and susceptible to HIV infection. About 100 Local Aids Council members gathered at Newcastle Council Chamber on the 11th of November 2015 ahead of the World Aids Day, December 1.
In his opening remarks, Honorable Mayor AF Rehman commended Samke Dube and the Special Programmes Unit team for the hard work and excellent services they have rendered towards the fight against HIV/Aids and the establishment of War Rooms. “We should be able to identify and assist needy individuals, especially those on medication and ensure that they take their medication as prescribed. Newcastle Municipality does not want to help statistics but people. We should be able to say these are the people we have assisted, not numbers”, said Mayor Rehman.

Honourable Mayor Cllr Afzul Rehman addressing aspiring and emerging entrepreneurs at the Small Business Week.
“The Small Business Week is one of the most important events in the calendar of the Newcastle Municipality. This is the 5th year that this event has taken place and each year we have seen this event grow”. These were the opening and welcoming remarks by Programme Director and Newcastle Municipality Strategic Executive Director for Development Planning & Human Settlements; Ms Nokuthula Thusi, when Newcastle Municipality in partnership with Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), ITHALA, Department of Economic Development and Tourism hosted the Small Business Week held from 13-16 October 2015 at the Blackrock Casino.
The aim of the event was to enhance Small, Medium and Micro Enterprise (SMME) and Co-operative Development to drive Economic Development by providing skills and information as well as opportunities to SMME’s, which include access to finance, access to markets and dealing with compliance issues with regards to the establishment of new businesses.
In his keynote address, Newcastle Municipality Mayor Cllr Afzul Rehman emphasized the need to create a conducive environment for business people to succeed. “We have events such as this so that you can all come together and put your minds together and come up with plans and strategies to be able to dictate to the leadership within the municipality on how to move forward in creating jobs for businesses to prosper and to ensure that we win this triple challenge of poverty, inequality and unemployment”, alluded the Mayor.
“We need to continue to grow Newcastle in attracting and bringing foreign direct investment to our town which will enable creation of sustainable jobs. The municipality is in the process of developing a very strong business retention and expansion programme, through this programme we will be visiting big businesses in Newcastle to ensure that these businesses retain and expand thus pursue support from them to assist in developing small businesses in Newcastle”, he concluded.
Guest speakers, Mr Bonke Shipalana; CEO of a Communications Firm & Founder of Power of 1 and Mr Sbonelo Mbatha; Chairperson of the BP Dealership Council, gave insight and experience as successful entrepreneurs.
“I am here to inspire you to become successful entrepreneurs. Most of us have the business plan with the experience but we don’t know the process of putting it together so it can appeal to others. There is a difference between a business and a business man/woman. The mistake we make is to understand the business and forget to train the business man/woman”, advised Shipalana.
When sharing his life experiences, from being a petrol attendant to registering for a BP Entrepreneurship Programme to now owning petrol stations around South Africa; Mr Sbonelo Mbatha urged those present to know their line of business and what it is that they are passionate about. “One of the biggest problems I have seen from aspiring entrepreneurs is to start big when you are small. Entrepreneurship is simple problem solving and in pursuit of solving problems, you make money”, said Mbatha.
In closing, emerging entrepreneurs; Mr Thami Mbatha, Mrs Sonto Makhubo and Mr Sandile Nazo shared their success stories and bestowed acknowledgement to SEDA for the assistance, guidance and the economic development of their businesses.
