PRESS STATEMENT
14 SEPTEMBER 2021
NEWCASTLE MUNICIPALITY’S COVID-19 VACCINATION CAMPAIGN EXCEEDS EXPECTATION- 75% STAFF VACCINATED.
The Newcastle Municipality has launched an aggressive campaign of challenging all municipal staff, including senior officials, to lead by example by vaccinating for the Covid-19. The campaign forms part of the municipality’s ‘I GOT VACCINATED’ program, which is aimed at inspiring community members, in particular the youth to receive their vaccination jab. The decision is also informed by the fact that 97% of municipal staff work with members of the public on daily basis. The campaign has yielded positive results as over 75% of staff are now fully vaccinated, including the Mayor Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba, Deputy Mayor Reuben Molelekoa, the Speaker of Council Samke Yende and the Acting Municipal Manager Vish Govender.
Mayor Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba led by example when he became the first official at the municipality to receive his Covid-19 vaccine jab. Mayor Cllr. Dr Mahlaba says the decision to get his Covid-19 vaccine jab is in line with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s clarion call for South Africans to vaccinate in a bid to achieve herd immunity.
“As a municipality our main objective was to prevent municipal buildings from becoming Covid-19 epicentres as most staff work and interact with the public every day. We concluded that the best way to minimize the spread of the virus was to encourage our staff to vaccinate and lead by example, so that we inspire members of the public whom we work with. I strongly believe that taking the vaccine will bring us closer towards achieving the national herd immunity which is necessary for us to fight this global pandemic,” remarked Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba.
Mayor Dr Mahlaba received his first Covid-19 Pfizer vaccine jab on the 18th of May 2021. The following month he then received his second Covid-19 Pfizer shot for full immunization. Two months ago, the municipal town hall was converted to a vaccination site, resulting in municipal staff flocking the venue to receive their jabs.
Mayor Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba emphasised the importance of having officials at government institutions to lead by example by vaccinating. He also lamented at the rapid rate at which unfounded and unscientific rumours about the vaccine were gaining traction especially on social media. Dr Mahlaba further challenged the youth of Newcastle to flood vaccine centres, so that the entire youth population would be immunized.
A few weeks later, Newcastle’s Deputy Mayor Cllr. Reuben Molelekoa also joined the campaign, along with the Speaker of Council and the Acting Municipal Manager.
The 75% fully vaccinated staff took their experience further when they shared their vaccination experience on the municipal social media pages, much to the delight of the public.
Unfortunately, the municipality has already lost seven employees to the Covid-19 during the second wave.

What a load of hogwash. We don't have a municipality
Then lead by example, sort out the raw sewerage porblems in our municipality, and do something about all the potholes and lack of traffic law enforcement on our roads!
If the town stinks, people will treat it as a rubbish dump! Simple as that...sort out our parks and recreational facilities, while you're at it!
So, who's voting ANC again?

I need a "mncm" emoji for your "we are listening and caring municipality" motto
We wouldn't have the problem of illegal dumping if refuse was collected on time and consistently. Thats if it is collected at all. We don't even know when are the correct days for collection anymore. The question i ask myself every week is when they don't come collect refuse on scheduled days, where are they? Is it staff shortage? Yet, i am charged for refuse removal monthly which i pay for without fail.

Municipality should look at ways of getting residents to recycle most household trash by giving incentives. This will decrease the amount of waste that goes to landfill sites.
