MUNICIPAL WORKERS STRIKE
The Mayor, EXCO and Senior Management convened a staff meeting with all the employees in the Municipality on 27 February 2014, in an attempt to amicably resolve grievances that were brought up by SAMWU and IMATU.
This resulted in the Human Resources Department instructed to investigate all the matters and submit a comprehensive report to EXCO for final resolutions to be adopted in this regard. It was with dismay to note the illegal demonstration in the Municipal building on Tuesday, 11 March 2014.
Newcastle Municipality condemns in strongest terms possible illegal actions taken by these employees. The decision to embark on an illegal strike and march to the main building to demand salary adjustment is totally unacceptable, given the fact that the matter is a national bargaining issue which possibly cannot be resolved through local bargaining.
On Tuesday, 11 March 2014, Legal Services Executive Manager Mr Makhosini Nkosi, issued an “Ultimatum” which gave these employees an hour to disperse but this was rejected outright by the employees and the Personnel Officers had to be protected by the Security Personnel. We wish to state categorically clear that ill-discipline will not be tolerated by the municipality and legal action will be taken against all employees who do not abide by official municipal orders. We are now working closely with the SAPS and other stakeholders to monitor the situation, investigate the matter and take the necessary action as we deem fit. We want to assure the community that we will leave no stone unturned to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book. We will not allow lawlessness within the ranks of the municipality thus compromising delivery of services to our ratepayers.
Assurance is hereby given that everything has been put in place to ensure the non-disruption of services and the maintenance of law and order in our town.
